Details

The Mitchell Art Gallery wants to learn about the access needs of the communities we serve. We would like to collaborate with a student to consult with community, work on an accessibility plan, and help us determine from community feedback what's feasible and actionable for the gallery.

Students should be prepared to:

  • Research and apply information on access and disability justice in arts and culture.
  • Draft and distribute a survey on access needs.
  • Review findings and collaborate on creating an action plan.
Deliverables

- Reaching out to existing services on campus that work with students who need support on campus, such as wellness services, Access and Disability Resources, safer spaces like CSGD and sexual violence office OVSPER

- Creating a form or survey about access needs for the MAG

- Dissemination plan for survey

- Reviewing and analyzing survey data

- Writing a report or plan based on findings

- Using the findings to write a programming plan in response to survey data and community engagement

Mentorship

Students will connect directly with the gallery for mentorship and supervision throughout the project. They can expect:

- Support with introductions with university offices

- Regular check-in meetings

- Access to technology and programs required to complete tasks

The John and Maggie Mitchell Art Gallery (MAG) is a public gallery committed to presenting art exhibitions, programs, and publications that feature diverse artistic and curatorial perspectives committed to critical discourses in contemporary art.

The MAG supports interdisciplinary, experiential learning for the public and for the university community. Located in the heart of downtown Edmonton in MacEwan University’s new Allard Hall, John and Maggie Mitchell Art Gallery programming also serves the local community through emphasizing safe, collaborative and relevant opportunities for learning and visual literacy development.

The gallery supports opportunities for students to develop academic, practical and leadership skills to support their futures as artists, cultural workers, and lifelong critical thinkers.
