Learner goals and capabilities

Through this course, students have gained the ability to review, critically consider, and assess a variety of contemporary issues in international management (IM). With an initial focus on multinational management and comparative management, international management has expanded to include issues concerning the globalisation of the world economy and its effects on competition between firms and nations.

The background of our students' skills include:

  • Comparative management — considering the transfer of management practices across countries, cross-national or cross-cultural similarities and differences of management phenomena
  • Globalisation — focusing on opportunities and challenges associated with organisational management in the global environment.
  • Sustainable development – focusing on the role of multinational companies in sustainable development.

Project Examples

During the semester, students are required to analyse a business case or research problem associated with a contemporary issue in international management that is identified by the industry partner/organisation. The students (formed in groups) work on the contemporary real issue or area of investigation identified by the organisation with an international presence. They will deliver a presentation highlighting the research findings and make recommendations to a representative of the industry partner. The industry partner should be a multinational organisation, operating in different countries. The project should be related to at least of the following themes: business sustainability, initiatives of the organisation. The project activities may include but are not limited to:

  • Designing creative, pragmatic, and sustainable options to address your international business issues
  • Synthesise and apply theory and research to explore contemporary issues your organization is facing
  • Sourcing, appraising, and using relevant data, information, and viewpoints to address current issues in your international management
  • Exploring strategies to incorporate new global understandings into practice
