Learner goals and capabilities

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Rochester brings together the technical expertise of our Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences with the clinical experience of our University of Rochester Medical Center. In doing so, we have established a cooperative environment that fosters innovations in medicine and health care.

To immerse our undergraduates in this process of innovation, our year-long senior design program provides an introduction to the medical device design process. Students develop prototypes to solve problems presented by local companies, clinicians or researchers. They also learn about the regulatory process, economic constraints and ethical challenges that come with creating new medical technologies.

Virtual Internship Opportunity

Students can complete a substantial project for your organization over the placement period. We suggest providing a starting project, but as the placement goes on there may be other duties or projects the student is asked to complete. Providing a central project creates structure for the internship, and gives the student (and organization) a tangible goal.

As a world-class research institution with a commitment to education, we take pride in providing opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students to become involved in the research process. Our biomedical engineering research doesn't stay in the laboratory. Between the Center for Medical Technology & Innovation, Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship, students have numerous opportunities to watch their medical discoveries move from the laboratory bench to the patient’s bedside.

Project examples that students can complete may include, but are not limited to:

  • Biomechanics
  • Biomedical acoustics
  • Biomedical nanotechnology
  • Biomedical optics
  • Cell and tissue engineering
  • Medical imaging
  • Neuroengineering
  • Regenerative medicine

Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

  • Q1 - Checkbox
Provide a dedicated contact who will act as the student's primary supervisor over the duration of the virtual placement. A secondary contact should be provided as a backup. Students will interact virtually with their primary contact regularly and as needed.
  • Q2 - Checkbox
Be available for a quick phone call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm that your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.
