Bio

I’m the founder of The J Healthcare Initiative, a nonprofit transforming substance use healthcare through evidence-based policy work and substance use health focused projects. Drawing from my lived experience as a formerly precariously housed, first-generation immigrant, I lead through the wisdoms of my trauma.

My work has engaged 174,000 college students, generated over 9800 project hours in health promotion, and influencing policies impacting 7 million people.

I am a Novartis Reimagine Health scholar with proven track record of innovative groundwork in the field of substance use and youths mental health. I established Canada’s first women’s drug user health circle and bring evidence-based policy advocacy to the UN sessions.

Drug-Policy Implication Study

We are planning to implement a policy, however before we do we would like to understand the expected implications of it within this population. This way, we will be able to mitigate any risks that the policy may pose by making adjustments before it is implemented. This will involve several different steps for the students, including: Identifying similar policies that have been implemented in other populations. Comparing our policy to other policies and researching the implications that they have had. Conducting interviews with people in the populations affected by these similar policies. Identifying risks and effects that are created by our policy. Creating recommendations on how we could change or improve our policy to make it as effective as possible.

Digital Magazine for Nutritional Harm Reduction for Alcohol Drinkers

The J Healthcare Initiative is seeking to support the marketing efforts of a community-led harm reduction initiative by publishing a digital magazine focused on the Downtown Eastside community. The project aims to highlight the efforts a community led group formed in 2011 to advocate for illicit drinkers within the harm reduction movement. The magazine will serve as an educational tool to improve the lives of Managed Alcohol Program participants through empowerment and support. It will address issues such as ending liquor pour-outs, creating safe outdoor spaces, changing shelter policies, expanding Managed Alcohol Programs, and ensuring that drinkers' voices are included in alcohol policy discussions. The goal is to reduce discrimination and promote safety among illicit drinkers.
